does anybody know whats going on with the helicopters over the redwoods? or the people coming in and asking where the "hippies are camping?" they scared my fiance out of the COUNTY!! weird... what goes on?!?!

Helicopters:
CAMP - Campaign Against Marijuana Production Helicopters are frequent overhead in all of Humboldt County, its a part of life.
The Redwoods Park area is a common place where travelers often attempt to camp. A lot of this traffic is most likely homeless travelers searching for a place to sleep. And while it is illegal to camp in the parks, the police force doesn't have the manpower especially right now to enforce same so after that lil detail being on the news in the last few days, the hippies will most likely increase rather than decrease esp w/warmer weather.
As far as your Fiance getting scared out of the County, if he can't handle those two items, he'd never be able to make it here Full Time. And it's not even really Spring or Summer here as of yet not to mention the fullness of the Harvest season. Believe me, the two areas you mention both increase dramatically with time throughout the year most every year.
I wish you the best whether you stay here in Arcata or move to an area more in line w/your Fiance's expectations.
I moved here 8 years ago after meeting my husband in Austin, TX through friends, talk about a Culture Shock but alas I've come to love this place more than any other place I've ever lived as far as the long term aspects of life go at any rate.

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:29 PMim fully aware of the "uniqueness" of arcata, as well as the situation in the woods on a normal basis. ive lived in willow creek for the past year, and we have work in the fall as far as harvest goes. he wasnt so concerned about the helicopters as he was the people coming into the woods looking for the "campies" the news talked about. hes looking for a legitimate job, not asking strangers online to give him a job caring for their pot. im sorry if you dont feel he'd make it there full time, and im not sure what you mean by his "expectations". hes looking for a job off the books until i get his social security card and birth certificate to him from new jersey. thanks for your thoughts though. -

It's a beautiful place to live for sure though yep work is somewhat seasonal here in a lot of ways w/the schools and universities out in the Summer and everyone back in the Fall, it can also be overwhelming at times.

Sat, April 26, 2008 - 1:32 PMOooops, now I realize you may have not meant the Redwood Park in Arcata but rather then Redwoods in general.
If that's the case, the simple answer is "Hippies are Everywhere," especially in Summer and around time for the Reggae Rising or Reggae on the River festival, if you're looking for that area of the Redwoods, check out Richardson Grove State Park, it's a beautiful spot but I presume all types camp there not just "hippies."
