Re: BOYCOTT THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 6:30 PMIM SURE MOST OF YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT THE CLOSING OF MUDDY WATERS MUSIC DUE TO THE COMPLAINTS OF ONE WOMAN WHO FEELS HER BEAUTY REST IN A COMMERCIAL ZONE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE BUISNESS AND FUN OF THE COMMUNITY.
WELL SHE JUST SO HAPPENS TO OWN THE VINTAGE AVENGER IN ARCATA...EVERYONE HERE CAN MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS ON WHAT TO DO, BUT I FOR ONE WILL NEVER GIVE A DIME TO HER BUISNESS.......SHE HAS TAKEN SOMETHING FROM A BUISNESS THAT ENSURES THEIR LIVELYHOOD, AND HAS TAKEN LIVE MUSIC AND DANCING FROM EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO HAPPENS TO BE UNDER THE AGE OF 21.
IF YOU DO HAPPEN TO AGREE AND ARE A HUMBOLDT COUNTY RESIDENT PLEASE REPOST THIS MESSAGE .
REMEMBER...WHEN MUDDYS WAS SHUT DOWN FOR MUSIC IT WAS DUE TO HER COMPLAINTS AND HERS ALONE....WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY LOSING SLEEP BECAUSE OF MUDDYS....ONLY ONE PERSON WHO FEELS THEY ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE HUNDREDS THAT FREQUENT MUDDYS SHOWS -

Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 9:26 AMI DISAGREE with your tactics. Trying to sabbatoge a persons business will not solve anything. Re-acting to a situation in an immature manner, and retalliation is not the answer, (and may get you into legal trouble if you are not careful).
If a demand for live music and dancing is present, Im sure other businesses will take advantage of the opportunity and provide a venue. In this tough economy businesses are alwayslooking for ways to bring in more money. If handled correctly this experience may create a better place than Muddys. Among many other possibilites, a new coffee shop is currently in the progress at the old Sacred Grounds location...who knows?
Accept the change, (change is the only constant in the universe). Nobody has control over what happens in life, we can only control how we re-act, and reacting in a positive manner will bring positive results.
Peace!

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 10:00 AMI half agree with you Vince; certainly retalliation isn't the best response to this. However, boycottin' her store, or advisin' others who fee the same as Darin niether conjures up legal issues-as far as I'm aware- nor is it out of line. She has made her 'vote' regarding Muddy's (and it's a shame her lone vote stands on better footing than that of the rest of the community), and members of the community, in turn, are priveledged to make there 'vote;' in this instance, simply to avoid her bouttueqe, when it comes to spending money, if they disagree with her position. As a bussiness owner, herself, she opens herself up to risks like this. If the curcumstances were different, and say another bussiness owner in town made it a point to voice their opinion, against say, community members who where either of minority race, or sexuality, I'm sure the community to react in the same way. In this case, the passion is as strong.
Another point, in response to your response: you make mention that, "if handled correctly this experience may create a better place than Muddy's." The unfortunately overlooked, perhaps, aspect to this entire ordeal is that Corey, the owner, took all the neccessary steps to insure he was compliant with City Codes regarding live venues. He insured that the sound did not reach beyond predetermined decibles; he made a concerted effort to keep the shows mid-week, with few exceptions-to acoustic, or otherwise quieter, fair; and he's never taking a show beyond midnight (apparently a time set by the city), oft' times durin' the week ending the shows sooner.
By single-handedly making complaints to the city (rather than to Corey?), she's managed a 'forced' community-wide boycott of his music venue; that is, she's helped to make a decision for the entire community, based on her own ideals and standards.
What Darin is suggesting is the inverse of her approach: it seems that he is offering up to the community a chance to 'vote' for themselves, based on their own ideals and standards. It appears Darin's localize around the snuffin' of the music, and he's decided to take action in what amounts, at least for me, be a fair response. The rest of us have the chance to come to our own conclusions, and I think he's documented that choice in his posts. As for me, I'll be followin' in his footsteps, or as the case may be, lead my footsteps, like Darin, away from her shop...at least until things return to the way they were, when the community (including those younger than 21) were blessed nightly with the opportunity to see great music (jazz, folk, country, funk, indigenious, etc.), and at a very inexpensive, and enjoyable, fair.
thanks,

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 11:35 AMGoatt,
Ive met you a couple times in person, I think the first time I was at Muddys with my friend Sara (years ago). Anyway, one of the few freedoms we have left in America is the choice of where to spend our money, and of course you are all free to stand for your cause.
Im not picking sides, Im just saying caution should be used...on a public forum he refered to her store as a "shit pit", and the allegations that she single handledly shut down Muddys better have solid proof before posting it on the internet, (does Muddys have a history of complaints in the past?) Involving her business name into it may not be the wisest move, its not hard to find lawyers looking for a good libel or slander suit these days .
Everyone needs to be aware of their actions and the possible consequenses, and use positive constructive means to achieve their goals. Strategy is important, like in a game of chess, everyone should carefully think things over before making the next move. Wrong moves may backfire. Positive!

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 11:38 AMHey All,
If she had a problem why didn't she approach Muddy's first - that's my main question.
And, If there is not as much business near Muddy's it will have a Karmic impact on her as it is which will be good and "will be nobody's fault but her own." It's not a place I usually shop but I will let folks know as well. Not cool at all. This is the one who started all this crap. And Vince, apparently she is the one who acted first on this deal. And it's the same w/Unions on strike, etc. Also, everyone has the right to boycott a business or organization they feel is acting against their best interest and in this she's acted against every live music lover's going best interest at the very least not to mention other complications that could arise out of same.
So, I too would rather save my $ to spend at Muddy's shows or other local live music venues once this gets resolved rather than spend any $ in her store besides if Muddy's can't have bands and we want them to stay in business at all, I would suggest we all support Muddys monetarily as well. And well if that means cutting corners elsewhere like on "Vintage Clothing," then that' that I guess. I wonder is she throwing a fit over Humbrews re-opening, the lady's shop is even closer to there. I surmise that if we're not careful with how this one goes down we could def. lose all if not most of the live music venues that have survived over the last few years - RIP Cafe Tomo/Arcata Theatre (anymore news on that front) - You Are Missed - Though I know Mazzotti's is doing a great job nonetheless still it'll never be the same.
I do however think its quite important to shop locally although I also shop globally and in other nearby cities and towns on occasion as well. I do however try my best to know which direction their profits are flowing if they are supporting political agendas and such as well.
I guess now that more people will have to travel further using more $ for gas/hotels/food than they could have saved seeing shows here at home at Muddy's will no doubt make a huge impact as well.
Also, being a freelance writer, I'm interesting in learning more about this if someone would like to send me e-mail with specific details re: same, I can try and submit something to the Arcata Eye and/or Times-Standard and see if it gets accepted. Let me know.
Well Happiest of Holidays to you all & remember the 20th and 21st is BTS at Humbrews - the 30 and 31st too as well as Kulica and Ukesperience at Six Rivers and I believe there's also a band at the Red Fox in Eureka.
Cheers. -

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 12:39 PMVince,
You bring to the table points that have a legitimate gravity, and shouldn't be taken lightly. In this respect, you will find you and I agree more than we disagree.
In terms of Muddy's past, they've certainly garnished a history of noise complaints. I worked there as the music coordinator for three years, and in that time contributed to reason for complaints. BUT, that was Muddy Waters Coffee Company, and Corey's new shop, Muddy's Hot Cup, is a different creature all together; a new business in every definition, and only affiliated with Muddy Waters Coffee Company (now, only a wholesale bean company, rather than a cafe and venue, itself) in that he serves their coffee. In the year that he's owned it, he's done an incredible job in re-vamping the venue, AND revamping how the music is worked out. Again, he's complied explicitly with the city in every way he is legally bound to. And, again, his shop isn't located in a zoned residential area. What I mean is, all my original points in my first point stand relevant to the case, and it appears to me each have been overlooked in favor of a minority resistance; whether it is indeed one person, or a few.
We live in an incredible town, rich with many avenues of culture, rangin' from musicians and dancers, to performer and poets. I'm not in a position where I am as willing to endorse decisions (especially as they birth themselves from a relative minority, that seek to minimize such a rich and rewarding resource in our community.
thanks,
goatt

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 12:37 PMvince....did she not sabotage muddy's buisness and take away 1000s of dollars a week in beer sales?? i dont think this is retaliation....and im not worried about the legal trouble...this is not defamation, nor is it slander....its mearly a FACT that she is the one that was complaining....as for another coffee shop going in at the old sacred grounds site....i have played shows there when it was sacred grounds and unless they have a beer and wine liscence the shows will not be anything to write home about...its sad i know but the fact is more people show up when they can drink beers....non alchoholic events tend to not pull so much of a crowd -

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 4:47 PMI can not speak for her motives, (one would assume she just wanted to sleep), it does not seem likely that her sole intent was to destroy Muddys business. The posts on this whole topic seemed exagerated and blown out of porportion, (ie. "MUDDYS SHUT DOWN!!" , "BOYCOTT THE VINTAGE AVENGER!" (lots of caps and punctuation) It seemed like a lynch mob or witch hunt was in the works.
There are 2 sides to every story, I have only heard what was posted here. I guess since I do not know all the facts I should not comment, (and I will stay out of it from now on). I perceived that people were angry and upset, and thought I would offer some advice. Best of luck to all. I hope a peaceful resolution can be met.
Peace! -

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 4:58 PMVince, I too hope for a peaceful resolution; and it is, after all, Arcata we live in, so somethin' assures me a peaceful resolution will be had before any other kind. And, indeed, you are right: there are two sides to ever' story, this one's no exception. I'm too far out of town to know the whole story, so I'm doin' my best, despite my own passion, to remain neutral until I return. In the meantime, happy holidays to you and ever'one else.
thanks,
goatt

Wed, December 19, 2007 - 7:02 AMYeah - Happy Holidays to You All As Well....
Now off to go cook up some breakfast....
& cofffee....
After all it's about that time again...
I surmise we all live one moment and one day at a time on this one. Personally I know my daughter has bought a few things there for Halloween though I've never been able to find things to fit so for me, it's really a non-issue though I'll definitely stop in at Muddy's a time or two more than I've done so in times passed to try and help out their cause of staying around music or no.
Brightest of Holiday Blessings to All,
Sharla

Re: Dont take it out on THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 3:47 PMI don't think in anyway this is slandering Vintage Avenger ( a shit pit it is too), but more like a bad review. I would want to know if store clerks had a reppor of being rude before I shopped at a store, or if they contibuted to something horrible like the KKK or Nazi parties. So in a sense, this is a boycott of not only the owner, but to the things she supports as a person and local business owner. And frankly, the day I give money to the music Nazi's, is the day I stop dancing.

Re: BOYCOTT THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 11:27 AMHow do you know it's her? The women on the thread (creature? ) who said she called, said she USED to live next door to Muddies and that she called and complained when she WAS there. The person who called this time likely still lives there .How do you know it's just one person who called? -

the paper posted her name...and muddys also told me that it was the vintage avenger lady -

Re: BOYCOTT THE VINTAGE AVENGER
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 12:40 PMA unwise move on her part, obviously, it has already begun to affect her Karma and her store by it being posted in the paper. This county is far too small for anyone to make enemies in and i have seen people forced out as well by their actions. In any small community let alone our lovely home of Arcata any mistake against the community such as this is often met with fuller force than wanted.
